Track a feeling through time, with curiosity

Naming emotions directly is hard; a numb or 'colour-blind' state makes it harder. Start from body sensation, treat each read as a single state-dependent data point, and watch the same recurring feeling evolve across time with curiosity instead of judgment.

When feelings are hard to find — numb, vague, or ‘colour-blind’ — demanding a clean emotion label up front sets you up to fail. Emotional expression is a learnable skill that most people were simply never taught, so being bad at it at first is normal, not evidence that something is wrong. A gentler entry point is to slow down on purpose (a pen and paper works even if you don’t think of yourself as creative) and scan the body for concrete signals: hot and cold tension and sensation, rather than an abstract emotion name. Guided body-scan exercises give this structure when self-directed attention drifts.

The second half is treating feelings as time-series rather than verdicts. The same underlying feeling reads differently depending on nervous-system state — over- or under-stimulated, over- or under-slept — so any single reading is one data point, not the truth about the feeling. The practice is to notice when a recurring feeling shows up again, record how it’s expressed right now, and follow it across occurrences to see how it changes and evolves. Holding that observation with curiosity instead of judgment and shame builds an accurate, non-defensive understanding of an emotion over time, which is far more reliable than trying to nail its name in a single charged moment.
