Tell hyperfocus from sustained attention by interrupting it

ADHD hyperfocus and autistic sustained attention look identical from outside but behave oppositely when broken. Hyperfocus is a crisis-and-deadline-driven surge that shatters badly on interruption and provokes anger, and is very hard to re-enter. Autistic sustained attention comes from enjoyment, tolerates gaps, and resumes at will. Test which you're in by whether it survives a break.

Deep absorption in a task can come from two very different engines, and telling them apart changes what to expect of yourself and how to structure the day. ADHD hyperfocus is incentive-driven: it fires under a crisis or a looming deadline, riding a surge of dopamine and adrenaline as a last-resort push. Because it depends on that pressure, it is fragile — an interruption is very hard to recover from, re-entering the state can be almost impossible, and being pulled out often provokes real anger. Autistic sustained attention runs on something quieter: enjoyment, interest and a sense of peace, with no external incentive needed. It can be paused and picked back up, tolerates gaps, and doesn’t collapse when broken. The practical test is interruptibility. If a break shatters the focus, angers you, and locks you out of getting back in, you were in hyperfocus and should protect the session from interruption while it lasts. If you can take a gap and return to the same depth, that’s sustained attention, and you can pace it across breaks without fear of losing it. The distinction also guides self-expectation: don’t rely on hyperfocus as a dependable daily tool (it needs a fire under it), and do treat a genuine interest as a stable, resumable resource you can build a routine around.
