Monotropism: a single attention channel

A monotropic brain pulls attention into one thing at a time at great depth, rather than spreading it thinly across many things at once — proposed as the shared wiring beneath both autism and ADHD, and the cost of that depth is slow, effortful switching.

Background

Monotropism describes a mind whose attention flows into a single ‘gravity well’ at a time and processes it at tremendous depth, as opposed to the polytropic pattern of attending to several things at once with little effort. It is offered as a candidate unifying account of autism and ADHD — the coin both conditions may be two sides of — though it remains a theory (originating with Murray, Lesser & Lawson) rather than an established mechanism. The practical consequence is a genuine tradeoff: deep focus and fast task-switching cannot both be demanded of the same person. A monotropic person who hyperfocuses and learns fast literally cannot turn on a dime, because redirecting attention means hauling it out of one well and into another — a large ‘turning circle’ that needs time and space. This is why group and dinner-table settings can push someone into going non-verbal: switching from speaker to speaker is itself a form of task-switching, and one-to-one conversation works precisely because all attention goes to one person. It is also why a focused interest can act as self-regulation — sinking into the single channel quiets an otherwise racing mind. Note this is distinct from the crisis-driven, deadline-fuelled ADHD hyperfocus: monotropic sustained attention is driven by enjoyment and can tolerate breaks, whereas hyperfocus is fragile and hard to resume once broken.
