Movement snacks for a dopamine and focus bump

Tiny bursts of movement give dopamine a regulating bump and even sharpen focus. Do ~20 squats while brushing your teeth or a few before a high-stakes task; balance on one leg while the kettle boils — single-leg balance recruits the cerebellum, which boosts the prefrontal cortex.

Movement is a fast, free dopamine lever, and the doses can be tiny. Any small movement — even fidgeting with an object — nudges dopamine up, which is regulating for a neurodivergent brain, so pairing a few squats with an existing habit (twenty while the toothbrush runs) or firing off a few right before public speaking or a focus task gives a quick boost when you need it. A second trick targets focus directly: standing on one leg, for instance while the kettle boils, forces the cerebellum at the back of the brain to work to keep you balanced, and that activity in turn influences and lifts the prefrontal cortex — the seat of executive function and attention. Drop a brief single-leg balance into a morning routine moment before you sit down to work. None of this replaces longer exercise, but the point is that the bar to a useful bump is far lower than a full workout — a 20-second movement snack is enough to shift the next few minutes.
