Earn the anticipation again

Dopamine fires on the anticipation of reward, and short-form media pairs that anticipation with zero effort and discomfort-avoidance — the recipe for an addictive loop. Re-couple anticipation to effort (work toward things you want, journal), and consume intentionally rather than abstaining all-or-nothing.

Dopamine is fundamentally a reward-learning signal, and it fires on the anticipation of a reward, not only its arrival — that anticipatory release is what drives the motivation to keep going. Historically that anticipation was paired with effort: you wanted something, you worked toward it, the dopamine carried you through the work. Short-form media breaks the pairing. It delivers high anticipation for near-zero effort, and couples it to the avoidance of discomfort instead — low effort, high anticipation, no actual reward earned. Repeated, that becomes the engine of an addictive loop, and it quietly trains you to dodge the very discomfort that produces growth, leaving a life that can feel short on fulfilment.

The repair is to re-couple anticipation with effort rather than to white-knuckle abstinence. Practically: deliberately work toward and “earn” the anticipation for things you actually want, and bring back slower effort-linked practices like journaling, so the reward system relearns that wanting is supposed to cost something. Pair this with intentional consumption rather than an all-or-nothing ban — labelling all media as bad is not the goal. The goal is reclaiming cognitive and emotional sovereignty over a limited daily bandwidth: choose what you give your attention to on purpose, instead of letting frictionless anticipation spend it for you.
