Deconditioning after porn (death grip)

A hard, dry grip when masturbating to porn conditions the body to a stimulus unlike intercourse ('death grip syndrome'). It's reversed with a looser grip and lots of lube — over time the stimulation approximates real sex.

This page isn't typically flagged for the selected profile — shown because you opened it directly.

Men who masturbate to porn with a hard, dry grip use a stimulus physiologically unlike intercourse, so the body acclimatizes and gets conditioned to that specific stimulation to reach orgasm. Deconditioning: deliberately change the technique — a loose grip, lots of lube — to approximate real intercourse; partner work helps too. It can feel frustrating at first, because the body is being weaned off ‘its’ stimulus. An important distinction when assessing the problem: erection difficulty (often psychological — shame, guilt, especially when a partner doesn’t know about the use) is different from difficulty reaching orgasm (conditioning); they call for different interventions.

What the research says

Scientific grade verified against the literature. No entries = no direct studies (graded from mechanism/experience).

What the grade means

A A — strongest evidence: meta-analyses or RCTs directly confirm it works (or, for diagnostic tools, strong validation of accuracy).
B B — good evidence: a single RCT, or a strong mechanism with supporting studies.
C C — weak / preliminary: a plausible mechanism, but few direct, controlled tests.
D D — no evidence: theory or isolated anecdotes, no studies.
