Choose an assessor who knows your presentation
Not every clinician can spot an adult, or a woman, on the spectrum — a general psychiatrist may dismiss you, while an assessor who specialises in your presentation is the difference between being missed and being understood. Deliberately screen for expertise before booking: prefer clinics whose staff are themselves autistic/ADHD or specialise in adult and female presentation, ask what deliverable you get, and value a robust diagnosis that later clinicians won't overturn.

The assessor matters as much as the assessment. General clinicians tend to measure adults against the male, childhood, stereotyped picture and wave away anyone who doesn’t fit it, so an adult — especially a woman — can be dismissed by the wrong person and recognised by the right one. The practical step is to screen for expertise before booking rather than taking whoever is available: seek a clinician known to specialise in adult autism, and in female presentation where relevant, and confirm that expertise (call around, ask directly) instead of assuming it. Clinics staffed by autistic or ADHD clinicians who ‘know what to look for’ can make the process far more comfortable and accurate, and this comfort can carry over to a virtual assessment done well. Two further checks pay off. First, ask what you will actually receive — a detailed multi-page report tends to ‘give a lot of answers’ where a one-line letter gives few, and that document is what you use afterward for self-understanding and accommodations. Second, if you have a history of being mislabelled by mental-health services, a specialist’s diagnosis is more defensible: choosing someone who genuinely understands the presentation makes the result robust and harder for a later clinician to question.
