Alcohol is appealing to an ADHD brain for a specific reason: it binds the GABA receptor and produces near-instant relaxation and social confidence, exactly the down-regulation the brain struggles to generate on its own. But the trade is bad. Because an ADHD brain processes alcohol harder, the next day brings a strong rebound — a jangly, heart-racing, anxious state — that overshoots the calm it briefly bought. And the combination of fast intoxication with impulsivity means more gets drunk before the effect is even noticed. The same GABA-binding calm is, in a healthier form, what magnesium-rich food supports, which is why the better levers point elsewhere. For social situations specifically, the move is to skip the drink as a mask and instead breathe into the moment and put attention on listening to the other person rather than performing — removing alcohol removes the rebound without giving up the function it was serving.
