Urgency-activation gap (no felt emergency, no engagement)

In ADHD, dopamine and norepinephrine signal urgency and salience — they are what create the drive to act. A task that carries no felt urgency fails to trigger that signal, so the nervous system doesn't engage it even when it is genuinely important.

Background

Dopamine and norepinephrine are the neurochemicals that flag a task as urgent and worth acting on. The ADHD nervous system runs on this urgency/salience signal rather than on abstract importance, so a task with no deadline, threat or excitement attached produces little of it and stays un-started — the brain effectively ‘won’t load the page’ until an emergency supplies the chemistry. A predictable side effect is that chronic firefighting (constant crises, last-minute deadlines) becomes self-reinforcing: each crisis delivers the hit, the pattern is learned, and the calm-but-important ‘needle-mover’ task — which carries no built-in emergency — gets ignored in favour of whatever is on fire. This is also why generic structure-based tools (planners, app reminders) stop working once novelty fades: they don’t change the underlying urgency signal that actually drives initiation. The implication for coping is not more discipline but deliberately attaching urgency/salience to the tasks that matter, on your own terms, before panic does it for you.
