Familiarity mistaken for safety

A dysregulated nervous system defaults to what it knows and codes the familiar as 'safe' — even when the familiar is chaos. It will choose a familiar hell over an unfamiliar heaven.

Background

Familiarity and safety feel like the same thing from the inside, but they are distinct. Under stress, the nervous system defaults to the most well-worn pattern available and codes it as safe simply because it is known — this is how the system got through everything up to now. A dysregulated system in particular loses the ability to tell the two apart, so it will recreate a familiar chaos because the chaos is recognisable, not because it is actually safe.

This explains a confusing experience that is often mislabelled “I’m addicted to chaos.” It isn’t a craving for drama; it’s the system reaching for the known. Under pressure, falling back on old survival patterns is the path of least resistance, and each time it does, it re-triggers sympathetic arousal and blocks the return to rest — keeping the body in survival mode rather than letting it recover.

Changing the pattern means a new neural pathway has to out-compete an entrenched one, and the system’s bias runs the other way: it will choose a familiar hell over an unfamiliar heaven. Building the new pattern is a skill, and acquiring skill requires spare nervous-system bandwidth — which is exactly what chronic stress depletes. So the practical order is to free up bandwidth first (lower the load), then deliberately practise the unfamiliar-but-healthier pattern enough times that it can finally win against the old default.
