Person-environment mismatch (not a defective brain)

Much neurodivergent difficulty comes from being placed in environments, demands and self-images built for a different kind of brain — a fit problem, not a broken-person problem. The same wiring that fails in a hostile setting can work well in a matched one, so the lever is the surroundings, not more willpower.

Background

A large share of day-to-day struggle is better explained by mismatch than by deficit: the environment, the relationships, the expectations and the version of yourself being attempted were designed around how a non-neurodivergent brain thinks, feels and works. Run that brain in a setting that fits it and the same traits often stop being problems. This reframes the recurring experience of ‘running twice as hard to get half as far’ — effort is usually already maxed; the missing variable is fit, not force.

The practical consequence is that the highest-leverage moves are environmental, not motivational. Curating surroundings, inputs and defaults changes the cues you respond to without spending willpower, and matching a role or routine to the brain can do more than escalating effort ever does. Person-environment fit is one of the better-supported themes in the ADHD-at-work literature (outcomes track the match between person and setting rather than raw effort), though that evidence is largely observational rather than interventional. The reframe also does shame-reduction work: naming a difficulty as a fit gap rather than a personal failing shifts energy away from self-suppression and toward accommodation and self-understanding.
