Aphantasia (no, or faint, mental imagery)

Some neurodivergent people have little or no voluntary mental imagery — 'visualise an apple' returns nothing, or a wispy image that fades under attention. It's a spectrum, often co-occurs with face-blindness, and reroutes how memory, navigation and learning actually work.

Background

Aphantasia is a reduced or absent ability to generate mental images on demand. It runs on a spectrum: at one end a total absence, at the other a faint ‘wispy’ image that dissolves the moment you try to focus on it. Because the visual learning route is closed or weak, memory and navigation re-route through other channels — typically words and sound. People who can’t picture a route remember it as a short verbal sequence of landmarks (‘straight across the roundabout, turn off right’); people who can’t picture a page can train auditory memory hard enough to repeat speech back word-for-word. The mirror trait is informative: strongly visual (hyperphantasic) people often can’t follow a spoken list of directions at all and must convert it to an internal map — so the same instruction that defeats them is the one an aphantasic person copes with, and vice versa. Aphantasia frequently travels with prosopagnosia (face-blindness): faces aren’t recognised out of context, so not greeting someone in the street reads as rudeness when it’s actually a recognition gap. Naming the mechanism turns ‘I’m bad at this’ into ‘my brain encodes in words, not pictures’, which points at the workarounds that actually fit — verbal route directions, trained listening, fixed routine to scaffold who you’ll meet, and pre-disclosing face-blindness so others approach you first.
