Allostatic load: the stress that never switched off

Background

Allostatic load is the cumulative biological cost of adapting to chronic stress — the wear-and-tear that builds up when the system spends future capacity to meet present demands. The concept comes from neuroscientist Bruce McEwen, who described several pathways by which stress accumulates rather than resolving. Three matter most here. Repeated novel stressors: each new, unpredictable hit (a stream of phone notifications is a steady supply of them) re-triggers the stress response over and over until the load stacks up. Failure to shut down: never dropping out of sympathetic ‘fight-or-flight’ arousal back into parasympathetic ‘rest-and-digest’ mode keeps the system loaded even when nothing is actively wrong. Prolonged response: the stress response failing to terminate after the stressor has already ended.

What this reframes is the experience labelled “burnout.” It is not a coping failure, a character flaw, or ordinary tiredness — it is an accumulated nervous-system debt. The body has been borrowing from tomorrow to get through today, and the bill has come due. The implication for what helps is specific: the bottleneck is usually not the amount of stress coming in (some of that is unavoidable) but the system’s lost ability to come back down afterwards. So the levers that matter are the ones that train and protect the down-regulation transition — reducing the supply of novel stressors, building in deliberate shut-down moments, and practising the return from sympathetic to parasympathetic — rather than trying to cope harder with an already-overloaded system.
